As Artificial Intelligence (AI) develops at an ever faster pace, many fear that the technology will sooner or later displace humans from the labour market. According to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, these fears are not unfounded – he believes that AI will indeed fundamentally change the way we work and will be able to replace human labour in many areas.
However, Gates stresses that there are three areas where people remain indispensable.
1. Coding – human thinking is still needed
Although artificial intelligence is already helping programmers, Gates believes that the role of human developers remains crucial. Creative, analytical human thinking is essential for detecting errors, refining algorithms and interpreting functionality. In addition, programmers need to understand how AI itself works – to make sure it doesn’t start behaving in a “crazy way”.
2. Biological research – where creativity counts
Human expertise is still needed for scientific discovery and biological research. AI may be able to analyse DNA or make diagnoses, for example, but Gates says that human curiosity, intuition and creativity will remain essential for real advances.
3. Energy expertise – too complex for automation
The management and development of energy systems is a complex and multifaceted task that AI alone cannot fully understand and control. According to Gates, the experience and decision-making skills of professionals will remain key in this area.
Less work, more opportunities?
While AI can transform or take over a lot of work, Gates says there can be a positive side to it. It’s possible that in the future, people will have to work less – for example, just 2-3 days a week. The time freed up could be used for other valuable activities.
Education, health advice and many other services could also become cheaper and more accessible with AI. Although there are still many question marks, Gates says AI could bring not only challenges but also many new opportunities in the future.
